parenthood...
i was listening to the radio today and they were reading a letter written by a mother who was having a discussion with her (married) daughter. the daughter was asking her mom whether or not she should have a baby, and her mother replied by saying that having a child is the most emotional and spectacular event you will ever experience. your life will inevitably change more than you can ever imagine. you are changed completely as a human being.
i've always heard that mothers have a connection with their children that fathers will never truly experience. (for obvious reasons). it's unfortunate to me that i will never really experience that true connection with my kids like my wife will. i'll love them like nothing else in the world, but i believe it when they say that it's not quite the same unless you're their mother. don't get me wrong, i don't want to be a woman, haha, but it's one of things that you think about and wonder, if only...

X/C, C/X, XC, CX, C, X - Ivan...
the news of the confirmed death of cecilia zhang comes as no surprise to many of us. if anything, i think it's a relief for her parents to know exactly what's happened to their daughter instead of living in wonder for the rest of their lives. i pray for cecilia's family and friends.
the whole MSN phenomenon of putting X and C in front of your name in respect of cecilia and in support of the jewish community all seems pretty contrived and silly in my opinion. if you really feel strongly about any of these issues, there's a lot more you can do then just putting a letter in front of your MSN name. go out write letters of protest against the idiots who are promoting anti-semitism or go out and put some flowers in cecilia's neighbourhood or donate some money to a missing children's fund. the XC thing reflects upon our society as if we care enough to recognize the sadness of the two situations, but we're too lazy to actually go out and do something about it.

top ten list...
i actually really like doing top ten lists, but i have a really hard time doing them because i often forget some of my favorite movies. beyond my favorite two movies, everything else is a blur. ah well. let's give this a try. so here goes, ivan's tentative top ten movie list (subject to change at any time):
1) Braveheart
2) Shawshank Redemption
3) Cider House Rules
4) Spirited Away
5) Eat, Drink, Man, Woman
6) The Pianist
7) Indian Summer
8) Fifth Element
9) Princess Bride
10) The Sixth Sense
honourable mention goes out to The Green Mile, The Passion, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, The Wizard (haha, I loved this movie as a kid) and Beauty and the Beast.
i guess i'm not one for the classics, breakfast at tiffany's, casa blanca, gone with the wind, out of africa, they were all good, but wouldn't break my top ten. i've decided that 6-10 are all great movies, but are definately subject to change. the top six would definately make my top ten though.

more on: eat, drink, man, woman...
i first watched this movie probably about a year ago, but i rewatched it this weekend and it just reaffirms that it's really one of my favorite movies, probably top ten. it's just such a heartful story that's really well told by Ang Lee (of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon fame). i think most chinese kids can relate to what the daughters in this movie go through and the food! the food in the movie looks amazing. haha. i'm starting to not make sense..... mmmm.... food....
from start to finish, this movie rules. so go see it and if you haven't seen it, don't worry, come over to my place and you can watch it for free!

i think it's time for a change...
i think this website has looked the same for too long and i'm starting to get bored out if. i want to change it. maybe i'll do that this weekend.
for now, i've noticed that there are no more pictures left, as i have done too many posts without posting a picture. this must be changed.
here's a picture of brian's busted foot after he fractured it skiing. a hairline fracture on your heel. that hurts. and here's a picture of gord and steph at moxies. i love colour filters on my new camera.

leafs trivia...
with the addition of ron francis, the leafs now have 9 players on their roster who have been or are captains of an NHL team. can you name all 9 and the team they were the captain of?
i can name 7 and their teams, i can't think of an 8th or 9th though. if you can think of the answer, you win my respect. worth more than anything in the world.

the passion...
i've written this blog three times and this is my third attempt. i can't really capture into words what i thought of this movie, but i'll try:
truely spectacular.
from start to finish, it captures raw emotion in a way that no other movie ever can.
"forgive them Father, they know not what they do"
i don't understand why this movie is controversial. the line above sums it up. this movie is not about the persecution of Jews. it's about tolerance, acceptance and love.
i loved this movie. it was extremely powerful. if it makes you think, for even a second, about what Jesus did for all of us, then i think Mel Gibson succeeded in what he set out to do. even if you're not religious, it makes you think about your priorities and what is truely important in your life.
so if you haven't seen it, go out now and see it. it's definately worth your time.

best D in the east?...
mccabe, kaberle, klee and leetch. the best foursome in the east? it's quite possible.
though chara and redden are better top two, rachunek and phillips don't stack up. behind gill, boynton and gonchar, the bruins are pretty thin. no stevens. that means behind niedemayer and raflaski? no chance jersey. and johnsson, therien and markov? uhh.. sorry philly.
it's pretty unbelievable, but the toronto maple leafs may have the best top 4 D in the east. i never thought i'd say that.

celebrities = heros?...
i've always had the mentality that celebrities, whether they be movie stars, sports stars, musical groups etc... are not heroes. it's always baffled me why people go so insane when they meet a celebrity. they are after all, human, and what have they done that is so great for society? you may argue that celebrities, make people happy, but to me, that certainly isn't true. true happiness comes from friends and family, not from tom cruise because he looked good in the last samurai and not from mats sundin because he brings home the stanley cup (granted, that would make me happy, but i don't think that would be the reason i would truely be happy).
recently however, i've started to change my mind a bit. i still wouldn't go ga-ga if i met a celebrity however, but i am beginning to respect some celebrities for the way they carry themselves. take mike weir for example. the man is incredible. defying all odds at 5'8" to become the 4th rank golfer in the world. people told him that a lefty in golf could never really succeed, and yet he has. he represents canadians extremely well: humble, yet confident. most of all, his fame and fortune has not gotten to his head and he readily gives his time for charity and public appearences. he has done nothing but bring positive energy and influence to an entire nation. accomplishments, i now believe, that are worthy of being called an hero.
